Bail-for-sale: Inside jail, Janardhana Reddy worked on plot to bribe judge
HYDERABAD:  Three judges in Andhra Pradesh have been arrested for allegedly offering - or accepting - bribes in exchange for bail for powerful politician G Janardhana Reddy. Statements from them and witnesses show how brazen the negotiations were.
Here are the top 10 developments in this story:
  1. Janardhana Reddy, a former minister from Karnataka, wanted bail "at any cost," according to his relative Dasarath Rami Reddy, who was arrested on Sunday in the cash-for-bail scam.
  2. In his statement to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Dasarath Rami Reddy has said he was asked to arrange Rs. 100 crore for the bail by former judge Lakshmi Narasimha Rao, who is one of the three judges arrested in the case.  Lakshmi Narasimha Rao, however, has said the 100 crores was offered to him by Mr Reddy's family without his naming an amount.(Read his statement here)
  3. Dasarath Rami Reddy says the politician's family was worried about how to send so much cash over from Karnataka.  Elections were being held in Andhra Pradesh, and vehicles were being checked to ensure they were not transporting money that would be used for bribing voters. So Mr Reddy's family decided to look for another "broker" who could lead them to the judge who would decide Mr Reddy's bail.
  4. The strategy for how to approach the judge who would decide Mr Reddy's case was decided when Dasarath Rami visited Mr Reddy in the Chanchalguda jail in Hyderabad.   The politician had been arrested in September 2011 for illegal mining.
  5. K. Lakshmi Narasimha Rao, one of the three judges arrested in the cash-for-bail case, has claimed that Janardhana Reddy's relatives offered Rs.100 crore for the bail.  He has said that he teamed up with another judge named Narasimha Rao and a local realtor to offer the money to CBI judge Pattabhirama Rao.  (Read judge Lakshmi Narasimha Rao's letter)
  6. However, the CBI judge handling the controversial case accepted a parallel offer which was allegedly brokered by his son, among others.
  7. Dasarath Rami says that along with Janardhana Reddy's brother, Somasekhara Reddy and Karnataka legislator TH Suresh Babu, he allegedly paid Rs. 10 crore to the judge through a man with a criminal record.
  8. The Anti-Corruption Bureau has already issued lookout notices for both Somasekhara Reddy and Suresh Babu to prevent them from leaving the country.
  9. Janardhana Reddy was granted bail by Pattabhirama Rao in a CBI court  on May 11.  A few weeks later, the judge was arrested.  CCTV footage  at a local hotel showed his son meeting with Mr Reddy's brother and a few others.  The judge's homes and offices -along with those of his associates -had been raided and large amounts of cash had been found.
  10. The Andhra Pradesh High Court cancelled the bail given to Janardhana Reddy.  The politician is currently in a Bangalore jail as he is standing trial in another mining case in Karnataka.
