Weddings, trade fair to hit traffic this week

NEW DELHI: The wedding season is back and so is the spectre of jams on the capital's roads. With the India International Trade Fair (IITF) under way and hectic construction activity by Metro, the next few days will be anything but smooth for those passing through major intersections in the city.

With nearly 3,000 weddings scheduled on Wednesday, traffic movement was affected in Chhattarpur, Vasundhra Enclave, Mukarba Chowk, Peeragarhi and on the road from Lajpat Nagar to Ashram, parts of Rohini and other areas. Traffic on the Mahipalpur-Gurgaon road was moving at a snail's pace. Traffic cops, however, said the jams did not last long, slowing down but not stopping traffic.

"Violation by any vehicle will invite prosecution for illegal parking. Vehicles not parked properly will be towed away with a fine of Rs 600, excluding towing charges, for wrong parking and disobedience of lawful instructions," said additional CP (traffic) Anil Shukla.

Wedding shoppers thronged major markets, including Karol Bagh, South Extension and Lajpat Nagar, leading to snarls in the surrounding areas. "I parked my car nearly a kilometre away from the jewellery shop due to the rush," said a shopper.

Traffic cops said farmhouses have been told to arrange for parking inside the premises and baratis are not allowed to walk on leading to the venue. "We discourage wedding planners to bring the procession to the venue on foot," said a senior traffic cop.

The area around Pragati Maidan is expected to be very crowded with IITF starting on Thursday. The fair is expected to attract about 1 lakh visitors each day.

"No vehicle will be allowed to halt or park anywhere on Mathura Road and Bhairon Marg. Visitors will not be allowed to park on Sher Shah Marg and at Purana Qila," said the cop. "I have been waiting for an hour to get to the market area in South Extension but the roads are all jammed," said a shopper.
