Battle for Bhadrachalam

Bhadrachalam key to Godavari delta irrigation

HYDERABAD: In terms of Lok Sabhaconstituency Bhadrachalam is part of the Mahabubabad (ST) seat in Khammam district and the T zealots say that handing it over to theSeemandhra region would call for a fresh delimitation exercise which is not possible now.

However, the Seemandhra activists claim that Bhadrachalam was part of the tribal belt in their region running all the way to Visakhapatnam and that its inclusion in their region post-division would greatly benefit the irrigation sector. According to them, the Bhadrachalam revenue division plays a key role in stabilizing the Godavari delta as much of the inflow into Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dhowleswaram in East Godavari district is contributed by the Sabari river from neighboring Chattisgarh flowing through Bhadrachalam.

Every monsoon, Sabari brings in copious amounts of water into the Godavari because of its flow through Bhadrachalam from the hilly terrain and forests of Chattisgarh. The transfer of Bhadrachalam to residuary Andhra Pradesh will also help in the better management of Polavaram, which the Centre wants to take up as a national project, the Seemandhra votaries claimed. But it is for control of water, that Telangana protagonists are ready to finish to the last for the temple town.

On its part, the state government report submitted to the union home ministry merely stated the historical background of Bhadrachalam but did not offer any options in case the division takes place. "Already, Hyderabad has become a major bone of contention. Now, Bhadrachalam too is turning into one," said an official.

Battle for Bhadrachalam hots up in Congress

HYDERABAD: The Congress leaders from Telangana and Seemandhra have decided to battle it out for Bhadrachalam even as the group of ministers on Telangana is scheduled to meet various political parties in next two days.

In a strong-worded statement on Sunday, information and public relations minister DK Aruna said that the people of Telangana were not ready give up even an inch of Bhadrachalam, and added that the whole mandal must be included in the separate Telangana state. "Bhadracahalam is in Khammam, which is a Telangana district. It is ridiculous to claim the mandal for Seemandhra. We will not allow it to go to Seemandhra at any cost," she said.

Meanwhile, Telangana leaders including deputy speaker of the assembly Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, MLC Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy and Union minister Balram Naik went into a huddle and decided to send a delegation to Delhi with their demand. The leaders said they would meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi over the issue.

Not to be left behind, Seemandhra leaders have also decided to take a delegation to the Delhi with the demand that Bhadrachalam be a part of their region. They would also be pressing for according Union Territory status for Hyderabad if AP is divided. While ministers Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and Vatti Vasantha Kumar met chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, Union ministers from Seemandhra are scheduled to call on the PM on Monday.
