Research themes

YOU ARE HERE: HOME > RESEARCH > RESEARCH THEMES
Research themes at IIHS correspond broadly to the schools of the proposed IIHS University. Our faculty typically teach, conduct research, and publish across several of these thematic areas.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Research interests in these theme focus on a variety of issues from economic geography to the role of land in economic development. Current work includes exploring the relationship between economic investments and the spatial growth of urban settlements, evaluation of national and state employment and livelihoods programmes, multiple meanings of land, land as an instrument of economic development, and looking at emerging urban forms such as urban industrial and freight corridors, special economic zones, and new towns.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY
Current IIHS research on the environment focuses on a range of issues from climate change to basic environmental services. Ongoing work examines climate change and disaster risk reduction, particularly in the urban context. Researchers are also exploring notions of common property and shared natural resources, environmental governance, issues of water supply and management, and the provision of water and sanitation services to urban populations, especially the urban poor. Earlier projects have also included the evaluations of national and state programmes and policies from a sustainability perspective.

GOVERNANCE AND PUBLIC POLICY
Research on governance and public policy at IIHS spans a wide range.  There are several researchers interested in different aspects of the governance of land: its acquisition, development, regulations, records, and transfer. There is also ongoing work that examines urban governance across different scales, with a particular focus on institutions. Another area of interest is environmental governance. Researchers are also exploring interlinkages between governance systems at different scales in the Indian context, but also globally.

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Research at IIHS engages with several cross-cutting themes that explore various aspects of human development. Current work examines new frameworks of conceptualising urban inclusion, urban poverty, education, affordable housing, employment and livelihoods, social security and welfare programmes, as well as urban violence. There are also significant overlaps with our ongoing environmental research, most notably an attempt to link climate change and disaster risk reduction explicitly with human development and the impact of these on vulnerable urban populations.

URBAN SYSTEMS AND INFRASTRUCTURE
Ongoing research on urban systems and infrastructure examines water supply and management, sanitation, and housing. There are also overlaps in particular with ongoing IIHS research on governance and public policy as well as current work on environmental issues such as climate change. Other research examines issues of mobility, and urban metabolism.
