BJP-TDP tie-up on the cards
HYDERABAD: In its quest for forming a key national alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party inched towards sealing a deal with its old ally, the Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh, senior leaders from both sides said.
"We are looking at an effective electoral strategy for Andhra Pradesh as we are confident of regaining ground in the significant southern state. The plan includes strategic alliance, but we will be able to reveal the details in a week's time," BJP national spokesman Prakash Javadekar told TOI.
Top BJP leadership sensing an alliance rushed Javadekar to Hyderabad on Sunday who met top TDP senior leaders and discussed strategy to recreate their old magic.
For the BJP, regaining lost ground in Andhra Pradesh means an obvious strategy to take back its old NDA partner TDP into its fold, as the combination had won 36 seats out of 42 in 1999. While the TDP bagged 29 seats, the BJP won seven Lok Sabha seats. But both parties were marginalized in the subsequent elections when they severed ties and fought polls separately.
In 2004, the TDP won five seats and the BJP drew a blank, as the Congress romped home with 29 seats.
The dismal performance was repeated in 2009 when the TDP got nine and the BJP could not open their account, while the Congress led by YS Rajsekhara Reddy won a whopping 33 seats.
"Going by the past experience there are lessons to be learnt for both the TDP and BJP. While I think the time has come for the TDP to regain power in the state, we must not miss the opportunity of an alliance," said senior TDP leader Muddu Krishnama Naidu, who held talks with Javadekar.
"The alliance would be good for both the BJP and TDP and I hope it all ends well," he added.
A national TV channel last week predicted that the TDP-BJP combine could win nine seats in Seemandhra.
While the alliance is a foregone conclusion, the parties are laying down separate electoral plans for the regions of Telangana and Seemandhra.
As the BJP is credited to have championed the cause of Telangana when the AP State Reorganization Bill was passed in Parliament last month, the party would be the senior partner in the yet-to-be born state, while in Seemandhra, it would ride piggyback on the TDP, banking on the party's pro-Samaikyandhra stand.
Leaders privately said the BJP will fight 8-10 Lok Sabha out of 19 in Telangana, leaving 20 out of 25 seats in Seemandhra to the TDP.
For the assembly polls, BJP will fight in 50-60 seats out of 119 in Telangana and TDP will field its candidate in almost all 175 segments.
Leaders of both the parties said the alliance was necessary as they have tough fight ahead in Telangana and Seemandhra.
In Telangana, the Congress and TRS would be a formidable combination, despite struggling to forge an alliance, while in Seemandhra, Jaganmohan Reddy's YSR Congress has emerged a force to reckon with.
"While a strong Modi wave is sweeping across the country, the BJP is not in a position to capitalize it in AP going alone. Similarly, we cannot so easily face Jagan Reddy in Seemandhra, and the Congress-TRS combine in Telangana by putting up an independent fight. So the alliance would be a win-win formula for both TDP and the BJP," said a TDP leader.
He said the combination could take on the YSR Congress by taking advantage of the perception that the NDA would form the government at the Centre and people would always prefer a winning alliance over one party, even in Telangana, where the Congress and TRS are struggling to come together.
