Pulichintala Project called as KLRao Sagar multipurpose irrigation project is a multi purpose project serving irrigation needs, hydro power generation and flood control. It is a crucial irrigation facility for farmers of four coastal districts of West Godavari, Krishna ,Guntur and Prakasam where irrigation facility for 13 lakh acres. It has 24 gates in all with balancing reservoir with a capacity of 46 tmcft. The cost of the project is Rs.1281 crores.

It is located between Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada and the Nagarjuna Sagar dam. It is in pulichintala village in Guntur district and Nemalipuri village on other side of the river in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh, India across the Krishna River.[1]
History
The project was first conceived in 1911, by British engineer Col Ellis. The foundation stone was laid by the then Chief Minister, N. T. Rama Rao on 13 November 1988 at a projected cost of 188 crores.[2] It was the first project to start under the ambitious Jalayagnam in the year 2004-05. It will open on 15 August 2013 by Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Kiran Kumar Reddy.[3]
Storage
It has 30 Tmcft live storage capacity to impound the Krishna river flood waters generated from the catchment area located downstream of Nagarjunasagar Dam. This reservoir provides timely water supply needed by Prakasam Barrage minimising water wastage to the sea. Lift canal schemes from the reservoir for irrigation in Nalgonda district are under implimentation.
Power project
A 120 MW hydro electric power station (4 units of 30 MW each) is in advanced stage of construction with planned completion in the year 2015.

STATUS OF ERECTION WORKS: Earth Mat: 1) Laying of earth mat for all the 4 units, Unloading Bay and service bay is completed and the work of extension of earth mat raisers is in progress. Pier Nose: 1)Erection of Pier Nose for all the four units completed. Pipings ‘s& Embedments in First stage: 1)Erection of DT Liner Drain Pipe is completed for all the four units. 2)Erection of air vent pipe 150NB ERW pipe in 1st , 2nd and 3rd unit up to EL+36M and for 4thunit up to EL+21M is completed (Near DT Gate Grove). 3)Embedding of Penstock/Spiral Drain Pipe in concrete is completed for all the four units. 4)Laying of Pipe Line for Dewatering Pump discharge is completed for 1st sump (near Unit1) and 2nd sump (near Unit 2). Pipings ‘s& Embedments in Second stage: 1)Embedding of Runner aeration pipe in concrete is completed for all the four units up to EL+31M. 2)Laying of Top cover drain pipe and Manhole pit to DT access Drain pipe is completed up to EL+22M out of EL+27M for all four Units.
2)Embedment of cooling water pipe is completed up to EL+36.0M for 3 units out of EL+50.5M. Draft Tube Liner: 1)Unit-1: DT Liner erection & pressure test on DT drain pipe is completed and the site handed over to Civil wing for 2nd stage concrete work on 29/03/11. 2)Unit-II: DT Liner erection & pressure test on DT Drain pipe is completed and the site handed over to civil wing for 2nd stage concrete work on 03/04/11. The E&M works are in standstill due to non availability of civil work fronts including unloading and service bay areas. Civil works were stopped on 16-09-2011. The civil works contract is terminated vide Lr.No.EE/C/ PCHES/Dvn/Vzp/F.26/D.No.303/2012, DT.14-11-2012 under Clause No.61 of PS to APDSS due to poor/nil progress of the works, after taking the approval from the Managing Director/APGENCO. Civil construction works were resumed by the contractor on 16-06-2013.
