Extreme-right wingers made a bit of a mistake with Sadiq Khan’s wife
London’s new mayor Sadiq Khan had to deal with a slew of Islamophobic comments against him during his campaign, including slurs he wanted to turn the capital into ‘Londonistan’.
But surely this ‘conspiracy’ theory is the most ridiculous of them all.
Tommy Robinson, leader of the UK branch of anti-Muslim Pegida, thought he had found evidence that his wife Saadiya had hidden the fact she wore hijab until the votes had been counted in order to deceive people.
But, uh, the woman he circled in his ‘after’ photo was actually Sarah Joseph, a campaigner for Labour and CEO of a media group.
If the picture he tweeted had been of Saadiya Khan, the decision to wear a veil would have been totally up to her and not an issue in any case.
But it had absolutely no basis in fact.
After seeing the tweet, right-wing website YoungCons picked up the ‘story’, describing Sadiq Khan as a typical politician who ‘aims to deceive’.
They claimed ‘Londoners may not have known what they got into after electing their first Muslim Mayor.’
Journalist Sunny Hundal described the mistake as the ‘best internet conspiracy yet’, adding: ‘Turns out that blind hatred can make you go crazy… who knew?!* (*we did)’
That moment when you try to whip up a furore over religion and end up looking ridiculous.
