Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati said, "Narendra Modi should have delved on extending reservation to the backward caste in private sector. Reservation to poor people from upper castes is also needed." She was reacting to Mr. Modi's speechin Rajya Sabha, on Monday.

"The quota of SC/ST should be increased and more communities should be included," she said.

The leader blamed the BJP and Congress for implicating her in Taj Corridor scam, and accused them of misusing the CBI to implicate her in NRHM scam ahead of Uttar Pradesh elections.

The CBI had quizzed the BSP chief regarding the reasons for an “irregular” bifurcation of the Health and Family Welfare Department during her tenure between 2007 and 2012.

"Dalits who have converted to other religions should also be given reservation, due to their precarious condition there," she added.

Ms. Mayawati said, "Backward class should take political power in hands to change their fate, it is the master key."

In the backdrop of a raging debate over the rise in acts of intolerance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said he wants to give the “Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat” motto the contours of a scheme and hopes that the scheme is able to connect and unite each and every Indian.

“Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,” the Prime Minister said Sunday in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on All India Radio. “The unity of the country… these values and culture should continue. I want to give “Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat the shape of a scheme.”

Modi said his government had sought suggestions on the My Gov platform regarding what should be the structure of this programme, the logo and how to increase public participation regarding this. “I have been told that a lot of suggestions are coming. But I expect many more suggestions to come. I expect a very specific scheme,” he said.

The PM urged the public to use their “creative mind” to come up with suggestions for the proposed scheme. “How can we make the mantra of unity and integrity and that of ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshtha Bharat’ a means to connect each and every Indian. What should be the scheme, what should the programme be? Jaandaar bhi ho, shaandaar bhi ho, praanvaan bhi ho aur har kisi ko jodne ke liye sahaj saral ho.”

He said citizens should also suggest what the government, society and civil society should do as part of that scheme. “Many things can come up. I am confident, your suggestions will be useful,” the PM told the nation.

Citing the example of one Javed Ahmad from Kashmir who was shot by terrorists in 1996 and suffered serious injuries causing him disability, Modi asked people to come forward and donate organs in greater numbers.

“He lost the capacity to stand on his feet again… The biggest thing was that an innocent had to suffer in such a manner, his youth was endangered but there was no anger or outrage,” the PM said narrating Ahmad’s life story. “He did not accept defeat… He converted this crisis into an opportunity to serve the masses and devoted his life to social service. For the last 20 years, he has been teaching children. He is also working to see how infrastructure for the disabled can be improved, including in public places and government building.”

He said Ahmad had “become a messiah for disabled people” and that his devotion is being specially remembered on the occasion of Disability Day on December 3.

Before leaving for Paris where he will attend a global summit on climate change, the PM said it is the responsibility of all to ensure that the earth’s temperature does not rise as global warming is already creating disasters like the recent heavy rain in Chennai. He asked people to adopt energy conservation and energy efficient measures like the maximum use of solar-powered items.

Modi recalled his proposal for setting up a SAARC disaster response mechanism and said the recently-held ‘table talk exercise and best practices seminar’ in Delhi was a good beginning in this regard. “We keep receiving news about the natural disasters from every corner of the world. Such are the tragedies which have never been heard earlier or imagined. We are now experiencing the impact of fast-changing climate. In our own country, massive rains recently hit Tamil Nadu and caused losses to it as well as other states. Several people lost their lives. I offer my condolences to them,” he said.

Living up to her name that means light of the world, Noor Jehan has been spreading light in at least 500 homes in Bairi Dariyaon and its neighbouring villages for the last 10 years.

A mother of seven who became a widow 25 years ago, Noor Jehan said, “Being uneducated, I didn’t have a source of income to raise six daughters and a son. I faced great difficulty while cooking and completing daily chores after sunset.”

“Since our village didn’t have electricity, children couldn’t study at night. Also, people avoided using kerosene lamps as they feared their houses could catch fire,” she added.

She then came in contact with Shramik Bharti, an NGO teaching people about the power of solar energy. An inspired Noor Jehan proposed to distribute solar lanterns in 50 houses of her village.

“I convinced people to use solar lamps as they were cheaper and safer,” she recalled. The next hurdle was how to charge these lamps.

Noor Jehan formed a group that helped her set up a solar power centre equipped with solar panels. She began to rent out the lanterns for Rs 100 per month.

Every evening, villagers come to collect a charged lantern and return it in the morning. From the money that she earns, Noor Jehan deposits Rs 1,700 in the centre for maintenance.

“I help my mother in her initiative that has not only changed the lives of people in this village but also in neighbouring villages,” said Shamshad Ahmed.

NEW DELHI: The Narendra Modi government has pinned its hopes on the "wisdom" of former prime minister Manmohan Singh to get Congress to come around on the GST issue and facilitate passage of the crucial reform legislation in the current session of Parliament. నెల్లూరులో జరిగిన విచ్చలవిడి కట్టడాల వల్లే ఇటీవలి కాలంలో ఆ పట్టణంలో వరద బీభత్సం సృష్టించిందని చెప్పారు.  అనంతపురం జిల్లాలో ఈసారి ఊహించని విధంగా వర్షపాతం పెరిగిందని, భూ గర్బ జలాలు అందక రాయలసీమ రైతులు ఆత్మహత్యలు చేసుకునే వారని చెబుతూ, 20 ఏళ్లలో ఎప్పుడూ లేనంతగా భూగర్భ జలాలు పెరిగాయన్నారు. 3 గంటల్లో 30 సెంటీమీటర్ల వర్షపాతం నమోదైందని చెప్పారు. అలాగే రాష్ట్రంలోని 150 దేవాలయాల పని తీరును ఆయన ప్రశంసించారు. ఈ ఏడాది రాష్ట్రంలో పర్యాటకుల ముఖ్యంగా విదేశీ పర్యాటకులు సంఖ్య పెరిగిందని చెప్పారు.
